Air layering is a plant propagation technique in which a branch or stem is encouraged to develop roots while still attached to the parent plant. This is achieved by wounding the branch, applying rooting hormone, and wrapping the area with a moist medium such as sphagnum moss, then enclosing it in plastic to retain moisture. Once roots have developed, the new plant can be cut from the parent and transplanted. Air layering is commonly used for woody plants that are difficult to propagate by cuttings.
