Apical dominance is a plant growth pattern where the main central stem grows more vigorously than lateral branches due to the presence of hormones, mainly auxins, at the tip of the shoot. This phenomenon suppresses the growth of side branches, allowing the plant to prioritize upward growth. When the apical bud is removed or damaged, lateral buds are activated, leading to bushier growth.
