Hard Pan

Hard pan is a compacted, dense layer of soil that is resistant to water infiltration and root penetration. It often forms beneath the topsoil due to repeated pressure from machinery or natural processes, such as the accumulation of clay particles. Hard pan can inhibit plant growth by restricting root development and reducing access to nutrients and water. Breaking up hard pan through mechanical tilling or deep plowing is often necessary to restore soil structure.
