Rootstock

Rootstock is the lower part of a plant, typically a hardy, disease-resistant variety, onto which the scion (upper part of a plant) is grafted. Rootstocks are used in grafting to combine the desirable traits of the root system, such as disease resistance or drought tolerance, with the fruiting or flowering qualities of the scion. Rootstock selection is critical in fruit tree cultivation and ornamental plant production.
