Understock

Understock refers to the root system or lower portion of a plant that is used as the rootstock in grafting. The understock provides the root structure and influences traits such as disease resistance, drought tolerance, and growth vigor. In a graft, the scion (the upper part) is attached to the understock to combine the desirable qualities of both parts. The selection of understock is important for the success of grafted plants, such as fruit trees.
