Phloem

Phloem is the living tissue in trees and plants that transports nutrients, particularly sugars produced by photosynthesis, from the leaves to the rest of the tree. The phloem runs parallel to the xylem, which transports water and minerals from the roots. Damage to the phloem, such as from girdling, can disrupt nutrient flow and severely affect the health of a tree.
